Solarisation

Solarisation and Sabatier are techniques origionally used in the dark room. But through the years it became more popular in digital photography. Solarisation is an over exposure of a negative. It highlights the dark parts of the photo. Also it can take the opposite of an image. You can use black and white or color to do this technique. There is posative and negative solarisation. To do this you change the S curve of the photo to make a U or and upside down U.

Pictoralism

Pictoralism is shown in many photographs now a day. It gives it an old fashioned looking quality to it. This artistic movement was lead by Alfred Stieglitz, this group of photographers thought it created personal expression in the early 20th century. The characteristics of pictoralism has a variety of techniques which include: black and white, soft focus, special filters, heavy manipulation, high contrast, lighting techniques, rough paper, brushes, paints and etching tools on surface of a photo, and alternative priting processes like sepia, carbon and platinum. To make a photo have the pictoralistic look i mostly changed my S curve and changed it for different colors like red green and blue. Also by altering the vibrance and contrast it gives it a different look. I like the way this looks in photographs and would use it again.

Kaleidoscope

For this assignment, we made kaleidoscope pictures by cutting apart a photo and duplicating and rotating the image. We use photoshop to do this. By doing this, we acheive a photo that has intricate design that looks abstract. I enjoyed this assignment because it was very cool to learn how to make photos look like that, and it actually looks like youre looking through a kaleidoscope.

Vignette, Faking Depth of Feild & Color Emphasis

In this assignment we learned how to create a vignette on our photos. A vignette is a photo whose edges fade into the surrounding paper. it creates a shadow around the sides to show emphasis to the center the photo. For my images i used a picture of rings which creates empasis on the rings and blurs out the edges of the table cloth. i also use a photo of hannah and when i added the vignette it makes people look and focus on her face and not the surrounding scenery.
The second type of emphasis we learned was faking our depth of feild with the gausian blur. is allowed us to keep one object in focus while we made the back ground blurry causing it to look far away.
The last type of emphasis we learned was making a photo black and white but keeping one part of the image in color. it makes you focus on that object and makes it the focal point of the photo.
Here are 3 images up above for examples of each type of emphasis.

Lighting

For this assignment we learned about the lighting techniques. There are many different types: Frontal, side, 3/4ths, and back. There are also direct lighting and diffused. in my photos i incorporated most of these techniques with MJ and studio light, also with hannah and kiley with natural light. These photos show many different lighting types and the difference between studio lighting and natural lighting. i had dificulties trying to reflect and diffuse natural light where as with studio light it was easier. I also had to change my white balance to tungsten so my photos wouldnt come out with an orangish tint. so many different techniques were used in my photos which reflected my hard work. In class we also learned how to blur the skin because in most magazines and photos of people the photographers blur the skin to make it look clear and neat. so I have an image of hannah after i blurred the photo. My theme was incorporated with my natural light photos because it deals with humanity and the basics of life. since hannah and kiley are my friends it shows friendship as a subtheme of my actually theme. i enjoyed this assignment and how it got me to use different lighting types and angles.

White Balance

In this assignment we were asked to change the white balance of our photos. if the photo had an orange tint, i used the tungsten effect to take out the orangish tint. if the photo was blue i used a fluorescent effect to take out the blueish tint so the whites in the photos were whiter. i realized that in my house the lighting casts an orangish color on the whites so a majority of my pictures used a tungsten effect. Since my theme is psychological inquest i took photos of objects that reflected a certain idea of humanity. For example i used a dream catcher to represent dreaming and day dreaming. That photo has a black and white effect on it. another one of my photos i took a picture of an eye to represent seeing and how important sight is in life. that photo has a blue photo filter to take out the orangish tones. and a third picture has light bulbs in it to represent ideas. like when you have an idea the lightbulb turns on. this photo has contrast and high saturation to make the photo look cleaner and clearer. i enjoyed this assignment and now i know how to make my photos look better and have the whites be whiter.
Here is my link to snapfish of the rest of these photos!!

A Day in the Life

For this assignment we had to follow a subject all the way throughout it's day to expirience what it expirienced and to see what it saw. We also had to take two pictures for each thing it saw, but change the ISO so it would have a low and a high ISO to tell the difference since low ISO's are for day light and hight ISO's are for darker lighting. For my progect, i took photos from my necklace's perspective. Since this object is always with me, its a day in the life of Mallory as well. For my day i did many things. first i woke up and my necklace is laying on the counter of my sink. So it stares up at my light fixture. then i put it on and i get ready for school and walk outside so it sees the trees and the pavement. Then i am at school so it sees the hallways. After school i drive home and it sees my steering wheel which i took a picture of. When i get home practice piano, do homework, get a snack and stretch since i had dance already that day. Then i text my friends and watch television and wait for dinner. As I'm waiting i go on the computer to do some of my mass media assignment and then eat. when dinner is over i see my mom cleaning up the kitchen while i read my textbooks after that i go on facebook then get ready to go to bed. This assignment documented all of this. SO EXCITING!!! To view these awesome pictures click here.

Artist Statement

I create art because it is a great way to express thoughts and feelings without words. Art is more than just taking pictures, it is taking pictures of meaningful things that convey who you are. Many things are inspirational to me. Mostly my grandpa because he is an artist and i strive to be like him and share my accomplishments with him. My inspirations are expressed in my work because i take pictures of my family and of subjects that my grandpa does. For example, he takes photorgraphs of dogs and flowers, so i also take pictures of them. The types of work i have made so far have been in photography one. But i also take pictures on my own amaturely. But this year i would like to take cool looking eye or sky pictures or something that looks artsy and cool.
